ASSOCIATE DEANS DODGE AND SAIDMAN-KRAUSS SERVE AS KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AT PENN STATE’S LEAD THE PRIDE November 2020 — On November 7, 2020, Associate Deans Jeffrey A. Dodge and Bekah Saidman-Krauss served as the keynote speakers at Penn State’s Lead the Pride. Their keynote address was titled “Leadership and the First Amendment: Making Your Voice Heard.” Their remarks introduced attendees to the legal framework of the First Amendment and its application to college campuses, events, and leadership. full story |

PROFESSOR MAKHLOUF TO SPEAK ABOUT “HEALTH CARE SANCTUARIES” AT THE LOYOLA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW BEAZLEY SYMPOSIUM ON HEALTH CARE LAW AND POLICY October 2020 — Professor Medha Makhlouf presented her current research on legislative, policy, and institutional responses to the problem of immigrant avoidance of healthcare institutions. The Symposium, titled “Viewing Health Justice Through the Lens of Public Health Crises,” explores the impact that public health crises have on vulnerable populations with a focus on the social determinants of health that made these populations vulnerable prior to such crises. PROFESSOR MAKHLOUF SELECTED TO PRESENT AT THE 2021 AALS ANNUAL MEETING BY THE SECTION ON LAW, MEDICINE, AND HEALTH CARE October 2020 — Professor Medha Makhlouf was selected by the AALS Section on Law, Medicine, and Health Care to present her latest research on integrating sociolegal needs screening with health care. The panel, titled “Health Care Coverage Reform in the Shadow of COVID-19,” is the Section’s main panel presentation at the Annual Meeting and explores how the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted stressors in our health care system. RAINS ADVOCATES FOR AMENDING THE INTERNATIONAL CHILD ABDUCTION REMEDIES ACT IN THE FEDERAL LAWYER October 2020 — For a number of years, Emeritus Professor of Law Robert Rains has been concerned about the delays in the federal court handling of international child abduction cases. In The Federal Lawyer magazine cover story, Rains advocates for amending the International Child Abduction Remedies Act to prioritize these cases and to create special rules of federal civil procedure to “fast-track” them. PROFESSOR LANCE COLE MODERATES CENTER FOR GOVERNMENT LAW AND PUBLIC POLICY STUDIES PANEL PROGRAM ON PENNSYLVANIA VOTING LAW AND POLICY: THE 2020 ELECTION October 2020 — Professor Lance Cole moderated an expert panel discussion on Pennsylvania voting law and policy that included former Pennsylvania Secretary of State Pedro A. Cortés (Dickinson Law 1999), Committee of Seventy President and CEO David Thornburgh, and Dickinson Law Distinguished Fellow in Law and Government Stanley M. Brand.
