Dermot Groome PROF. GROOME SPEAKS TO THE KUPFERSCHMID HOLOCAUST-HUMAN RIGHTS PROJECT AT BOSTON COLLEGE LAW SCHOOL

February 2021 — On February 24, 2021, Professor Dermot Groome gave a presentation to the Kupferschmid Holocaust/Human Rights Project at Boston College Law School. His presentation, Genocide and International Justice, summarized the law of Genocide and addressed the international community’s growing complacency towards accountability mechanisms for atrocity crimes. Dermot Groome PROFESSOR GROOME FACILITATES EXPANSION OF THE INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE PROGRAM TO THE KOSOVO SPECIALIST CHAMBERS AND SPECIALIST PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE

February 2021 — Under the leadership of Professor Dermot Groome, who is a former international criminal law prosecutor, Penn State Dickinson Law has expanded its International Justice Program. Beginning in the fall of 2021, Penn State Dickinson Law students can work as fellows in the Kosovo Specialist Prosecutor’s Office. Full story

Dermot Groome PROFESSOR GROOME PRESENTS VICTIM DRIVEN INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE TO THE STIMSON CENTER

January 2021 — Professor Dermot Groome was invited to present his research to the Atrocity Study Prevention Group of the Stimson Center, a nonprofit, non-partisan think tank devoted to international peace and security. Groome presented Victim Driven International Justice (VDIJ), his idea for an alternative justice mechanism that uncouples justice for the victims of serious international crimes from the geo-political forces that dictate whether the international community supports international justice in a particular instance. Dermot Groome PROFESSOR DERMOT GROOME CITED IN SUBMISSION BEFORE THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT OF SOUTH AFRICA IN JACOB ZUMA CASE

December 2020 — Professor Dermot Groome’s work on the Right to Truth has been cited in support of an order requiring former president Jacob Zuma to appear before a commission inquiring into corruption by officials. The Right to Truth is an emerging right under the international human rights law that recognizes that under some circumstances individuals have the right to compel disclosure of non-public information in the custody of government officials. March 2020 — Renowned criminal law expert Professor Dermot Groome held a briefing today in light of the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) recently overturning a lower court decision and authorizing the Prosecutor to investigate crimes alleged to have taken place in Afghanistan. Dermot Groome DICKINSON LAW COMMUNITY REFLECTS ON THE HUMAN AND LEGAL COSTS OF ATROCITY CRIMES

November 2019 — Atrocity crimes and their legal implications have been in the news of late. Last year, then-U.S. national security adviser John Bolton set off a national debate when he criticized the function of the International Criminal Court, whose stated mission is to punish and deter atrocity crimes. Penn State Dickinson Law Professor Dermot Groome has seen the personal, moral and legal implications of atrocity crimes firsthand.

Dermot Groome PROFESSOR GROOME CO-ORGANIZES TWO EVENTS FOCUSED ON GENOCIDE AND JUSTICE

November 2019 — Professor Dermot Groome has seen the personal, moral and legal implications of atrocity crimes firsthand. He led the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) prosecution of Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, the Siege of Sarajevo and the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia. Groome worries too many young people are unaware of this history, and he wants to raise their awareness. He helped organize “Responding to Atrocity Crimes,” a symposium held at Dickinson Law in October 2019, and a public event including a screening of The Trial of Ratko Mladić—a documentary featuring Professor Groome, a panel featuring survivor stories from Bosnians who have settled into central Pennsylvania, and a reception featuring Bosnian food. September 2019 — Professor Dermot Groome attended the annual meeting of the Islamic Community of North American Bosniaks held August 30 - September 1, 2019 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At the gala dinner, he was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for perseverance in the fight for justice by Grand Mufti Subahadin Ćeman. Full story

March 2019 — “The Trial of Ratko Mladic,” a 90-minute documentary featuring Professor Dermot Groome, made its U.S. premiere on Thursday, March 14, 2019, at the Dodd Center for Human Rights at University of Connecticut School of Law. It was broadcast nationally on Tuesday, March 19 at 9 p.m. EST on FRONTLINE—PBS’ flagship investigative journalism series that explores and illuminates the critical issues of our times from business and health to social issues, politics and war.
