PROFESSOR PRINCE PRESENTS HER RESEARCH AT NATIONAL BUSINESS LAW SCHOLARS CONFERENCE (VIA ZOOM)

Samantha PrinceJune 2021 — Professor Samantha Prince presented her current research on modernizing the 401(k) plan to accommodate the modern transient workforce at the National Business Law Scholars Conference 2021 that was held via Zoom. Her presentation explained why 401(k) plan vesting schedules for employer contributions fail workers who change jobs frequently.

Professor Prince discussed Amazon’s philosophy to promote high turnover of workers and how such policies not only demean workers, but such policies also erase workers’ potential for accumulating wealth through their 401(k). During her presentation she also discussed racial disparities in 401(k) participation and how such disparities exacerbate the wealth gap. Prince’s current research takes a hard look at participation and vesting schedules in 401(k) retirement plans and how they need to be modernized to meet the needs of our current workforce.
