PROFESSOR ANDREA J. MARTIN TO PRESENT AT THE 2025 AALS MEETING
October 2024 — Professor Andrea J. Martin has been invited by the Section on Jewish Law to speak at the Association of American Law Schools’ (AALS) 2025 Annual Meeting. She will participate in a panel discussion focused on definitions of antisemitism, their implications for regulating antisemitic speech and conduct on college campuses, and the consequences of eschewing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition, which is endorsed by the U.S. Department of State, 36 states, and numerous governments and civic institutions worldwide.
Professor Martin will discuss recent research that shows that states that have not adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism have experienced a drastic increase in antisemitic incidents on university campuses following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7. In contrast, states that have integrated the IHRA definition into their laws have benefited from the clarity and guidance it offers, as evidenced by significantly fewer antisemitic incidents. Martin will address the effectiveness of utilizing a legal definition of antisemitism to foster safe, inclusive environments for all students, regardless of their religion, nationality, or political beliefs.
Professor Martin is eager to engage with her fellow panelists, including Professor Marshall Breger from Catholic University, Columbus School of Law, and Professor Seth Oranburg from the University of New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce School of Law.
Professor Andrea J. Martin researches the intersection of law and antisemitism within broad legal, historical, and political contexts and explores its connection to other forms of group-based hate. Her scholarship focuses on constitutional issues and the intersection of the law with historical and contemporary antisemitism and racism. Her scholarly work is dedicated to proposing legal strategies and policies to combat these issues.
