Sara GerkeJanuary 2022 — Professor Sara Gerke co-authored a piece, namely “When Machine Learning Goes Off the Rails,” in the Harvard Business Review. This piece was now selected as the top 10 must-reads 2022 by the Harvard Business Review.

This article analyzes how machine learning systems may go wrong and what executives can do to mitigate these risks. Questions that are addressed include: Is it better to “lock” algorithms or permit systems to continuously evolve? How does one ensure that these systems perform as intended? Professor Gerke’s co-authors include scholars from Harvard Law School, INSEAD, and the University of Toronto.

Professor Sara Gerke is an Assistant Professor of Law at Penn State Dickinson Law. Her research focuses on the ethical and legal challenges of artificial intelligence and big data for health care and health law in the United States and Europe. Before joining Penn State Dickinson Law, Professor Gerke served as a Research Fellow in Medicine, Artificial Intelligence, and Law at the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School for the Project on Precision Medicine, Artificial Intelligence, and the Law (PMAIL).
