PROFESSOR NEWTON TO BE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CRIMINAL SENTENCING REFORM AT UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW SCHOOL OF LAW

Brent NewtonMay 2025 — On August 8, 2025, Professor Brent Newton will present the keynote address at the University of Glasgow School of Law’s conference, “What Works and What Could Work Better: International Lessons on Sentencing Guidelines.”

Participants at the conference will critically examine developments in the United States to offer insights into key issues, such as the use of imprisonment and effective sentencing. By reflecting on both successes and ongoing challenges within the American context, the speakers will highlight lessons that are relevant internationally, sparking important discussions on how to balance public safety with fairness and proportionality in sentencing decisions. The presentation will not only explore innovative practices but will also address areas where reform efforts have fallen short, providing a nuanced perspective that emphasizes adaptability to different legal systems and societal contexts.


In 2009, Practitioner in Residence Brent E. Newton was appointed as deputy director of the United States Sentencing Commission, a position he held until January 2019. Professor Newton also practices civil, criminal, and immigration law in Maryland and Texas. In addition, he has been a lecturer, adjunct professor, or visiting professor at several other law schools, including American and Georgetown Universities, the University of Houston Law Center, and Seoul National University in South Korea. Professor Newton has been an elected member of the American Law Institute since 2010.
