PROFESSOR MAKHLOUF PRESENTS AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY SYMPOSIUM ON EMERGING ISSUES IN BIOETHICS

January 2020 — Professor Makhlouf presented her research on the ethics of DNA testing in the U.S. immigration context, at the invitation of the editorial board of the American Journal of Law and Medicine. The Symposium, titled “Emerging Issues in Bioethics,” explored bioethical legal issues in new and developing areas of health care.

Medha MakhloufProfessor Makhlouf’s presentation recounted the history of DNA testing in the U.S. immigration context, described the privacy risks of expanding DNA surveillance generally and for immigrants, in particular; and summarized the significance of new regulations finalized by the Department of Justice for bioethics and immigration law.


Professor Medha D. Makhlouf is an Assistant Professor and Founding Director of the Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic at Penn State Dickinson Law. She has a joint appointment in the Department of Public Health Sciences at Penn State College of Medicine. Professor Makhlouf’s research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of health law, immigrants’ rights, and poverty law and policy. Her recent scholarship has been published or is forthcoming in the New York University Law Review, the Northwestern University Law Review Online, and the American Journal of Law and Medicine.
