PROFESSOR LUCY JOHNSTON-WALSH PRESENTS AT THE PENNSYLVANIA INTERGENERATIONAL CONFERENCE

Lucy Johnston-WalshJuly 2022 — Penn State Dickinson Law Professor Lucy Johnston-Walsh presented at the Penn State Department of Agricultural Sciences Intergenerational Conference on the topic of “Connecting Scholarship and Practice to Support Kinship Families in the Commonwealth.” Professor Johnston-Walsh presented as part of a panel along with Professor Kristina Brant and Anita Rogers of Generations United. The conference was held at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center on July 5-7, 2022. This conference showcases innovative and impactful intergenerational initiatives taking root across the state of Pennsylvania and beyond. Professor Johnston-Walsh presented on her research on the report Kinship Care In Pennsylvania: Creating Equitable System for Families. The panel members discussed issues associated with children being raised by relatives and the support available to caregivers. The panel introduced how scholarship can inform both advocacy and practice to not only improve the support provided to relative caregivers but also ensure these supports are distributed more equitably.


Lucy Johnston-Walsh is an assistant professor of law and founding director of the Dickinson Law Children’s Advocacy Clinic. Professor Johnston-Walsh’s research, teaching and service focus on juvenile law, specifically legal challenges of youth involved in the foster care system. She supervises law students in the legal representation of youth involved in the dependency system and her scholarship directly relates to systemic issues presented through the clinic cases, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration in the field of child advocacy. Her recent scholarship has been published in both medical journals and law reviews including articles in Family Court Review, Akron Law Review and Seattle Journal for Social Justice.
