PROFESSOR EMERITUS ROBERT E. RAINS NAMED TO NEWLY FORMED EMERITUS ACADEMY AT PENN STATE UNIVERSITY

Robert E. RainsOctober 2023 — Professor Emeritus Robert E. Rains has been named to the newly formed Emeritus Academy at Penn State University and awarded the title of Academy Professor. The Emeritus Academy’s mission is to recognize and promote the scholarly and creative activities of Penn State’s emeriti faculty while fostering engagement within the University. It also aims to support professional growth and collegiality among its esteemed members. In September, Professor Rains participated in a Zoom meeting with the inaugural class of 33 academy professors from various branches of the University.

Professor Rains continues his legal and literary work, as well as community involvement. His review of Archivist Emeritus Mark W. Podvia’s new book, The Strange Case of Dr. Paul Schœppe, appeared in the Spring 2023 issue of the Dickinson Law Review. He made a presentation in September to the Retired Professionals of Dickinson College entitled, “An Idiosyncratic Review of the Supreme Court’s 2022 Term and Preview of the 2023 Term.” He is completing his eighth year as editor of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Quarterly, the PBA’s scholarly journal. He serves on the Cumberland County Youth Aid Panels, a diversionary program for first-time juvenile offenders. He continues to write articles for Plum Lines (the journal of the U.S.-based Wodehouse Society, of which he is a past-president) and Wooster Sauce (the journal of the UK Wodehouse Society). He is a long-term volunteer at the Bookery which raises money for the Bosler Public Library by accepting donated used books and reselling them at bargain basement prices.
