Amy C. GaudionMarch 2023 — Professor Amy C. Gaudion presented her work-in-progress, “Tattooed Servicemembers and the Pentagon’s Watch Dog: Countering Violent Extremism in the U.S. Military” as part of the lightening round sessions of the 2023 National Conference of Constitutional Law Scholars, hosted by the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law on March 23-24, 2023.

Professor Gaudion’s project examines the potential rise of domestic violent extremism (DVE) within the U.S. military, paying particular attention to efforts by DVE groups to recruit veterans and active duty servicemembers. It reviews the existing legal framework for assessing the First Amendment rights of servicemembers, examines recent efforts, through policy directives and legal reforms, by the U.S. Department of Defense to counter the rise of DVE in its ranks, including the establishment of a new position within the department’s Office of Inspector General, the deputy inspector general for diversity and inclusion and extremism in the military.
