Works-in-Progress Frequently Asked Questions

Lutie LytleWe have compiled a list of answers to questions that we have received regarding the Lutie Lytle Works-in-Progress portion of the Workshop. If you have questions that have not been addressed here, please contact us.

Will Lutie Sisters comment on my Incubator, even though no one has been officially assigned to comment?

The expectation is that all Lutie Sisters, including those presenting, will attend sessions to comment on papers. Therefore, even though Incubators do not have assigned commentators, they are supported with feedback on their papers. We are relying on Lutie Sisters to provide feedback on Incubator and other sessions throughout the conference.

How much time is allotted for Intensive sessions and what is the format?

We have scheduled 75 minutes total for an Intensive Paper session. These 75 minutes may be used as the presenter sees fit, according to their needs. The only caveat is that both commentators receive equal time to comment before opening comments to the larger group. For instance, if Commentator A gets 15 minutes, then so does Commentator B.

Typical format consists of 10 minutes for the presenter, 15 minutes for each commentator, and the remainder of the time for other attendees. Most Intensive presenters want as much time for feedback as possible. Please inform the session attendees of the time allotments you decided upon at the start of the presentation and request that one of them volunteer as a timekeeper.

How much time is allotted for WIPs and Incubator sessions and what is the format?

Incubator sessions are scheduled for 35 minutes, with a 5-minute break between sessions. The format is 8 to 10 minutes for the presenter, 5 minutes for the commentator, 13 to 15 minutes for audience feedback, and 2 minutes for the presenter to respond. Please designate a volunteer timekeeper.

Although I was not assigned as a commentator, may I provide comments on a paper?

Absolutely! All Lutie Sisters are provided access to the Google Drive with papers and the schedule of the WIPs, Incubators and Intensives (including the titles of papers), and all are expected to attend and provide feedback to support Lutie Sisters to support their scholarship endeavors. We are relying on Lutie Sisters to provide feedback on Incubator and other sessions throughout the conference.

What is my role when I attend an incubator session that I am interested in?

An incubator (Inc.) is an idea for an essay or article, and the length of this document is typically an abstract and/or 1-5 pages (with or without footnotes). An incubator session is a half-baked idea session, designed for receiving feedback on a paper idea. A commentator for an incubator is expected to have read the abstract and/or document and should give comments and suggestions about the idea and its viability as a larger project.

What is my role as a commentator of an Intensive session?

An intensive paper (Int.) is a complete essay or article (with footnotes). A reader for an intensive paper session is expected to have read and made red-lined type-written comments (and/or have written a memo) about the substance, grammar, and structure of the document. A reader should also suggest sources if necessary and/or ways to improve the abstract and introduction of the paper.

What is my role as a commentator of a WIP?

A work-in-progress (WIP) is a paper draft ranging from 15 to 40+ pages (with footnotes). A draft paper or part of a draft paper is needed for a work-in-progress. A commentator for a WIP is expected to have read and made detailed written comments about the substance, grammar, and structure of the document.

May I comment during a WIP or Intensive even though I was not assigned as a commentator?

Yes, absolutely! Although the designated commentators will be the first to respond after a presentation, the floor will then be opened for further commentary and your feedback is welcomed and appreciated.
