Professor Lara B. Fowler quoted in Lancaster Farming News article

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.— Professor Lara B. Fowler is quoted extensively by Lancaster Farming News in an article published in July titled “Getting More From Manure: Denmark Trip Shows Pennsylvanians the Possibilities of Biogas” that details a recent trip to Denmark taken by a Pennsylvania delegation.

Denmark has accelerated its biogas industry over the past decade. Fowler accompanied others in higher education, employees at Pennsylvania agencies, and those working in the biogas industry on the tour, which highlighted medium-sized farms and massive microbial digesters.

Fowler explained how the Danish model has become a huge success and what Pennsylvania can learn from the approach. “The gas molecules to them were more valuable than electrons, electricity, because there’s more you can do with the gas molecules and upgrading it to different products,” Fowler said.

Fowler also provided photos for the story. She said the group toured three sites most days and also spoke with government officials.

“My sense is that they actually really appreciated that everybody was coming in already knowing quite a bit about this,” Fowler said. “We weren’t there to learn the basics. We were there to figure out the details.”

Professor of Teaching Lara B. Fowler is an attorney, mediator, and facilitator who works at the intersection of law, science, and working with communities. She focuses on challenging questions related to energy, food and agriculture, water, climate, community resilience, and sustainability. In addition to teaching and research, she is the faculty advisor for Dickinson Law’s Alternative Dispute Resolution student group; a nominator for The EarthShot Prize; the jury chair for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize; the vice president of the Chesapeake Bay Journal board of directors; and a board member for Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Science and Technology Policy Program (COPA STEP).
