Professor Jud Mathews updates free, online ‘Administrative Law’ casebook

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA—Since 2020, Professor Jud Mathews has published a free administrative law casebook online. This month, he released the sixth edition, which includes cases from the most recent Supreme Court term: Trump v. Slaughter, Trump v. Cook, and FCC v. AT&T. Students can download the book in PDF format or, if they prefer a hard copy, order a low-cost print-on-demand version.

“I taught administrative law out of many different casebooks, and through that experience, I developed strong ideas about how to present administrative law to students. Eventually, I decided to build a book around those ideas," said Mathews. "Accessibility and affordability are huge advantages of publishing the book as a free PDF. And the print version costs less than $25. There is just no reason why a law school casebook has to cost $370. I can also update the book frequently to include recent cases. The sixth edition is the third new edition in three years. Staying current is important because administrative law is a fast-changing field.”

Jud Mathews is a Professor of Law at Penn State Dickinson Law with courtesy appointments in Penn State's Department of Political Science and School of International Affairs. His scholarly work focuses mostly on administrative law and constitutional law. He has written extensively about techniques of constitutional rights adjudication, in the United States and in other jurisdictions, and in particular about proportionality review.
