Professor Emerita Laurel S. Terry coauthors Sixth Edition of prorep casebook

CARLISLE, PA—Professor Emerita Laurel S. Terry is a coauthor of the recently published Sixth Edition of a casebook entitled Professional Responsibility: A Contemporary Approach. As publisher West Academic notes, “This is the only [professional responsibility] casebook on the market to include international comparisons throughout the book,” and Terry is responsible for those comparisons.

Terry joined this casebook with the Second Edition and has participated since that time. In addition to Terry, the Sixth Edition coauthors include legal ethics professor-scholars from the law schools at Duke, Fordham, the University of Houston, Wake Forest, Washington University in St. Louis, UC Irvine, and UCLA, as well as the newly named dean at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, Lonnie T. Brown.

The casebook’s webpage explains that the Sixth Edition “offers a comprehensive, challenging, and engaging treatment of the law and ethics of lawyers' work, including professionalism, in a modern and accessible format. It is the only casebook on the market to include international comparisons throughout the book and an entire chapter devoted to exploring different lawyering perspectives. Terry’s interest in professional responsibility dates back to her first year of teaching, when it was part of her course package in academic year 1985–1986. Her interest in international and comparative lawyer regulation issues dates back to 1987, when she taught a comparative legal ethics course in the Law School’s Vienna-Strasbourg summer program. Her interest in these topics continued throughout her teaching career, and her scholarship is available on her Penn State personal webpage.

She has participated in international, national, and state organizations that address lawyer regulation issues; her service work covered all three stages of lawyer regulation: admissions, conduct rules, and discipline. Terry continues to be an active member of the PBA Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee, as well as several International Bar Association committees.

Professor Emerita Laurel S. Terry, who held the inaugural H. Laddie Montague, Jr. Chair in Law and was Penn State Dickinson Law’s inaugural Associate Dean for Research and New Faculty Development, is a three-time Fulbright recipient who writes and speaks about the impact of globalization on the legal profession, especially with respect to regulatory issues. Her scholarship has identified emerging issues for the legal profession and urged stakeholder engagement, new initiatives, and regulatory reform. In addition to speaking at academic and professional conferences, she has been invited to speak about her scholarship to organizations that include the Conference of Chief Justices, the National Conference of Bar Examiners, the National Organization of Bar Counsel, the National Conference of Bar Presidents, the CCBE, which represents EU’s legal profession and legal regulators, the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, the International Institute of Law Association Chief Executives, the International Bar Association, and the International Conference of Legal Regulators.
