Penn State Dickinson Law celebrates 2026 convocation in Carlisle and University Park

CARLISLE and UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.—In August, Penn State Dickinson Law welcomed an accomplished J.D. Class of 2029, as well as incoming Master of Laws (LL.M.), Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.), and exchange students, to the Carlisle and University Park locations.

During convocation remarks delivered live in Carlisle and simulcast to University Park on August 19, Penn State Dickinson Law Interim Dean Sarah J. Williams applauded students for choosing to pursue their legal education.

“You are here today because you are ready to accept the duties that must accompany the competent practice of law. We, as faculty, administration, and staff, are here today to bear witness to your commitment and to support you in your legal journey. We congratulate you, we celebrate you, and we welcome you to our legal community,” Williams said.

Student Bar Association (SBA) leaders from each location also addressed new students during convocation, offering advice honed from their own experiences. “Penn State is a school built on community, but community doesn't happen by accident. Go to events, join an organization, talk to the person sitting next to you. Take advantage of the opportunities that are put in front of you, especially the ones that come with free food,” said University Park SBA President Kate Crockett ’27.

“Give yourself grace and remain open-minded about the legal field. Take advantage of externships and internships. Network with your classmates, alumni, and through bar associations. Ask questions and pursue your passion. Today begins the fastest three years of your life,” said Carlisle SBA President Devon Spiva ’27.

Convocation closed with students reciting the honor code oath and professionalism pledge, promising to exhibit integrity, accountability, and dedication to service.

Orientation balances opportunities for connection and learning

Planning the New Student Orientation (NSO) programming requires extensive coordination and collaboration.

The Academic and Student Services and Graduate and International Programs teams organized NSO activities providing practical information to help students thrive as the new year began. Second- and third-year student volunteers supported their efforts.

NSO for new J.D., LL.M., S.J.D., and exchange students ran from August 17 to August 21. It featured educational sessions on navigating differing viewpoints, obtaining academic support services, using the Career Services Office, preparing for the bar exam, and more. The fourth day offered J.D. students opportunities to perform local community service.
