CARLISLE, PA—Daryl Lim, H. Laddie Montague Jr. Chair in Law and associate dean for research and strategic partnerships, will participate in the Seventh Berkeley–Tsinghua Conference, “Transnational IP in an Age of AI and Global Competition,” at Tsinghua Law School in Beijing on October 15. Lim will join a U.S.-China comparative panel examining large language model (LLM) training and copyright infringement.

The panel, moderated by Jyh-An Lee of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law, will bring together Lim with Jiang Ge of Tsinghua Law School, Robert Merges of Berkeley Law, and Seagull Song of King & Wood. Their discussion is expected to address the copyright rights implicated by AI training, fair use and other copyright limitations, emerging regulatory challenges for AI platforms, collective licensing for artificial intelligence (AI) training, and whether differing national approaches may create pressure toward regulatory arbitrage. The subject connects directly with Lim’s scholarship on copyright, artificial intelligence, and the governance of emerging technologies.

Launched in 2018, the Berkeley–Tsinghua Transnational IP Conference brings together scholars, judges, practitioners, policymakers, and industry leaders from China, the United States, and other jurisdictions to examine developments in intellectual property law. The conference is organized through the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, its Asia IP & Competition Law Center, and Tsinghua Law School. The 2026 program addresses transnational IP litigation, standard-essential patents, licensing and commercialization, AI’s challenges to patent law, copyright and AI training, and trade secrets against the broader backdrop of global competition and increasing regulatory fragmentation.
